Do you place more importance on other sports than swimming lessons? Swimming lessons should be the primary focus for your child from the ages of 1 to 6 years old, or until they can swim independently and competently. There are several reasons parents fail to prioritize swimming lessons and water safety for children under 8 years of age.

The financial cost associated with competing priorities, limited availability due to busy schedules, and other activities can hinder participation. Additionally, maintaining and developing friendships through after-school sporting activities and hobbies plays a role, along with a lack of understanding regarding the significance of swimming lessons in preventing drowning, prioritizing water safety, and misconceptions about age—such as believing their toddler is too young, not ready, or waiting until they are older.

Teachers estimate that 48% of Year 6 students cannot swim 50 metres and tread water for two minutes. Report - 2025 Royal Life Saving Australia
